“Hey… What’s Your Number?”

Hey, what’s your number? Remember back when you were single, and a guy would ask for your number? Sometimes it made you cringe, and other times, it felt like a compliment. Well, now that we’re in our 50s and beyond, being asked for your number takes on a whole new meaning. It’s not about dates or flirty conversations anymore—it’s about your health. Your cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar—these are the numbers that really matter now. But what if I told you that one of the most courageous things we can do as we age is to prioritize our health by knowing the numbers that tell our body’s story? I’m talking about biomarkers—those critical indicators that reveal the state of your health from the inside out. And just like back then, they can make you uncomfortable or empowered, depending on how much you know about them. But here’s the truth: knowing these numbers is a form of self-respect and love. It’s about showing up for yourself with the same courage you’ve shown the world.

Menopause is a milestone, and it’s a reminder that our health isn’t something to take for granted. Whether it’s cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, or bone density, understanding your biomarker numbers is an act of self-awareness, a form of self-care, and a way to cultivate resilience as we navigate the next chapter of our lives. Knowing these numbers isn’t about perfection or control; it’s about knowledge, empowerment, and staying grounded in the truth of where you are right now.

Why Biomarkers Matter

Biomarkers are measurable indicators of your biological state, which can tell you how well your body is functioning. They can provide early warnings of health risks such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and even certain cancers. These numbers help you make informed decisions about your lifestyle, diet, and treatment plans. You wouldn’t drive across the country without checking your fuel gauge, right? Biomarkers are like your body’s dashboard.

Here are some key biomarkers you should be familiar with:

Cholesterol Levels: LDL (bad cholesterol) and HDL (good cholesterol) provide insights into your heart health. High LDL can clog arteries, while high HDL helps clear them.
Blood Pressure: Hypertension is a silent killer, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Keeping this number in check is crucial for longevity.
Blood Sugar Levels: Elevated glucose levels may signal diabetes or prediabetes, both of which increase the risk of heart disease.
Bone Density: Postmenopausal women face a higher risk of osteoporosis due to hormonal changes. A bone density test will reveal whether your bones are thinning and what steps to take to protect them.
Inflammation Markers: C-reactive protein (CRP) is a marker of inflammation, which plays a role in various chronic diseases, including heart disease and arthritis.

Knowledge is Power (And Action is Key)

I get it. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when we hear words like “cholesterol” or “blood pressure.” But fear is often rooted in the unknown. The moment we embrace vulnerability and face these numbers head-on, we start making space for change. Armed with this knowledge, you can take proactive steps—whether it’s incorporating heart-healthy fats into your diet, getting more movement in your day, or managing stress more effectively. These aren’t just habits; they are acts of courage and love toward yourself.

The Courage to Look, and the Courage to Change

Vulnerability is at the heart of health because it takes courage to look at your numbers, especially if they’re not where you want them to be. But remember, health is a journey. Knowing your biomarkers gives you the opportunity to pivot, make adjustments, and show up for yourself in a meaningful way. It’s not about chasing perfection. It’s about accepting where you are with grace and doing the next right thing for your body.

Purpose After 50: A New Chapter

Turning 50 often marks a time of reflection, growth, and even reinvention. It’s a moment to ask, “What’s next for me?” This stage of life can bring new meaning, new purpose, and new ways of showing up in the world. Understanding your biomarkers is just one part of creating a life aligned with your values, strengths, and passions. When we commit to understanding and improving our health, we pave the way for more energy, more connection, and more purpose.

Take Action: Know Your Numbers

So, here’s my challenge for you. Schedule that check-up, request those blood tests, and get to know your numbers. Don’t wait for a crisis to act. You deserve to feel empowered in your body and confident in your ability to navigate the changes that come with aging.

And remember: You are worth this effort. Knowing your numbers isn’t just about health; it’s about stepping into your power and owning the incredible woman you’ve become.
